Arctic Basin Ports’ Throughput in October 2021: Ore Down

    The total cargo throughput via the Russian Arctic basin ports in October 2021 decreased by 2.9% year-on-year.

    The article is based on SeaNews PORTSTAT online service (available for SeaNews subsribers).

    According to SeaNews PORTSTAT analytic online service, export declined by 5.7%, and import was down 28.6%. Cabotage, on the contrary, grew by 2.7%

    The share of the Arctic basin in the total cargo traffic via all the Russian seaports in October 2021 amounted to 11.3%.

    47.7% of the total cargo traffic was crude oil, LNG accounted for 17.9% and coal and coke for 13.5%.

    The highest growth was in the oil products (up 3-fold), other general cargo (+37%) and non-ferrous metals (+11.3%).

    The commodities that decreased the most were other bulk (suction) (-50.6%), ore (-50.3%), and chemical and mineral fertilizers (-45.8%).

    Murmansk accounted for 54.9% of the aggregate cargo throughput via the Russian Arctic basin sea ports in October. Sabetta handled 30.8%, and Varandey 5% of the total.
