In 2023, the sales of new cars and light commercial vehicles in Russia increased by 57.8% year-on-year to make 1.13 million units.
Starting from June 2023, the Association of European Businesses (AEB) press release has been supplemented with sales data provided by PPC JSC (Passport industrial consulting), including, among other things, sales volumes not included in AEB statistics. The AEB expects that this will make it possible to give a more objective assessment of the state of the new car sales market and its dynamics.
According to the information provided by PPC JSC on sales of new vehicles based on data on their transfer to owners, December 2023 was marked by an increase in sales by 84.6%, or by 59,083 units compared to December 2022, and amounted to 128,930 cars.
Russian and Chinese brands were the market leaders in 2023.
Lada remained the top brand in the Russian car market in 2023 with its sales up 89.9% year-on-year to 352.6 thousand units.
China’s Haval was the second with 118.8 thousand units sold, up 3.5-fold year-on-year.
Another Chinese brand Chery rated the third with more than 118.1 thousand cars sold, up 3.1-fold year-on-year.
One more Chinese car maker, Geely, was in the fourth position selling in Russia more than 84 units, up 3.4-fhold year-on-year.
Russia’s GAZ rated the fifth with 56.1 thousand units sold, up 33.2% year-on-year.
In 2023, the Russian car market was dominated mainly by Russian and Chinese brands, which saw their sales grow significantly, while the sales of European, Japanese and other foreign car makers dropped.
