“Ural” Nuclear-Powered Icebreaker Back to Arctic

  • The “Ural” nuclear-powered icebreaker has left the quay of Baltic Shipyard in St. Petersburg and set sail for the Arctic, United Shipbuilding Corp has reported.

    Prior to this, the vessel underwent scheduled maintenance in the dry dock of Kronshtadt Marine Plant shipyard. After transiting to Murmansk, the icebreaker will continue escorting vessels in the Northern Sea Route.

    The universal nuclear-powered “Ural” icebreaker is the third (and the second serial) vessel built to 22220 Design at Baltic Shipyard.

    The ships of the series are the largest and the most powerful icebreakers in the world. They are designed to assist round-the-year navigation in Western Arctic.

    • LOA: 174 m,
    • Beam: 34 m,
    • Draft: 10.5 m / 9.3 m,
    • Deep displacement: 33.54 thousand tons,
    • Power unit capacity: 60 MW,
    • Life cycle: 40 years,
    • Crew: 54 people.
