More Icebreakers to Be Built for Russian Arctic

  • RF President Vladimir Putin has signed an order amending the Development Strategy for the Arctic zone of the Russian Federation till 2035.

    The amendment concerns increasing the number of icebreakers and search and rescue vessels to be built for the Arctic.

    In accordance with the Order, the number of universal nuclear icebreakers of Design 22220 is increased from five to seven, and the number of number of rescue vessels from 16 to 46. 16 rescue vessels are to be built by 2024, and 30 more by 2030.

    Also, no fewer than four non-nuclear icebreakers, three hydrographic and two buoy-laying vessels are to be built at Russian yards for the Arctic zone.
