Russian Railways’ Laden Container Traffic Up 16.6% in 2021

  • Russian Railways have reported a 12.1% year-on-year increase in rail container traffic during 2021. All in all, more 6.5 mn TEU was carried during the period under report.

    Domestic container traffic grew by 6.4% up to 2.47 mn TEU, export was up 7.8% to 1.56 mn TEU, import up 13.6% 1.39 mn TEU, and transit up 34.4% to 1.08 mn TEU.

    Laden container traffic made more than 4.6 mn TEU, up 16.6% year-on-year.

    Commodity-wise, containerized grains grew the most, up 2.2-fold to 27.1 thousand TEU. Non-ferrous ore and raw sulphur were up 1.4-fold up to 42 thousand TEU, and potatoes, vegetables and fruit up 1.6-fold to 12.5 thousand TEU.

    Consumer goods were up 26.8% to 504.7 thousand TEU, hardware up 28% to 430.9 thousand TEU, machinery, engines and equipment up 27.1% to 377.6 thousand TEU, vehicles and parts up 10.7% to 273.2 thousand TEU.

    Containerized chemicals and soda were up 7.3% to 751.6 thousand TEU, timber and woodwork up 10.9% to 599.2 thousand TEU, ferrous metals up 20.7% up to 248.4 thousand TEU, other and LCL cargo up 33.4% to 177 thousand TEU, and non-ferrous metals up 3.8% to 152.9 thousand TEU.

    Construction cargo transportation increased by 18% up to 138.3 thousand TEU, chemical and mineral fertilizers by 27.7% to 53.3 thousand TEU, fish by 31.6% up to 28.7 thousand TEU, and other food products by 19% up to 198.3 thousand TEU.

    Containerized oil and products were down 10.9% to 72.4 thousand TEU, metal structures down 5.6% to 15.5 thousand TEU, and meal and flour down 1% to 10.6 up thousand TEU.
