Northern Sea Route Cargo Transit Up 66%

  • During the 10 months of 2021 (January 2 through October 3) freight transportation by the Northern Sea Route increased by 4.8% year-on-year from 26.9 mn tons up to 28.2 mn tons, the RF Federal Agency for Maritime and River Transport reports quoting the statistics of the Northern Sea Route Administration.

    Transit freight traffic by the Northern Sea Route surged 66% from 1.2 mn tons up to 2.1 mn tons during the period under report.

    LNG and condensed gas traffic from Sabetta increased by almost 1.9% from 16.4 mn tons up to 16.7 mn tons.

    During January-October 2021, the Northern Sea Route Administration issued 1,155 permits for vessels to transit the NSR, up 18% year-on-year from 974 permits issued during the same period of 2020.
