Russian Railways’ Traffic Up 3.7% YoY in January-September

  • During January-September 2021, Russian Railways loaded 956.2 mn tons of cargo, up 3.7% year-on-year.

    Coal loading increased by 8.1% up to 276.9 mn tons. Oil and products, Russian Railways’ second most important cargo in terms of volume, was up 2.6% to 160.1 mn tons. Ferrous and manganese ore increased by 0.7% up to 90.2 mn tons.

    Ferrous metals were up 2.3% to 50.7 mn tons, timber and logs up 2.6% up to 32.3 mn tons, cement up 6% to 20.4 mn tons, ferrous metal scrap up 21.9% to 12.3 mn tons.

    Industrial and forming materials loading grew by 5.1% up to 26.4 mn tons, chemical and mineral fertilizers 3.1% to 48.3 mn tons, coke up 6.2% to 8.8 mn tons.

    Construction cargo loading was down 4.6% to 97.1 mn tons, soda and chemicals down 0.4% to 18.1 mn tons, non-ferrous ore and raw suphfur down 0.9% to 15 mn tons, and, grain down 1.5% to 18 mn tons.

    Rail cargo throughput during January-September 2021 made 1,959.1 bn tons per km, up 4.4% year-on-year.

    In September, Russian Railways loaded 106.4 mn tons of cargo, up 1.2% year-on-year.

    Cargo throughput in September amounted to 217.1 bn tons per km, up 2.4% year-on-year.
