Arctic Basin Ports’ Throughput in April 2021: Ferrous Metals Up

    According to SeaNews PORTSTAT analytic online service, the total cargo throughput via the Russian Arctic basin ports in April 2021 decreased by 4.5% year-on-year. Export declined by 4%. Cabotage was down 7.1%. Import, on the contrary, grew 13.8%.

    The share of the Arctic basin in the total cargo traffic via all the Russian seaports in April 2021 amounted to 11.2%.

    42.8% of the total cargo traffic was crude oil, LNG accounted for 26.3% and coal and coke for 18.3%.

    The highest growth was in the ferrous metals (+48.6%), piece cargo (+34.8%) and chemical and mineral fertilizers (+32%).

    The commodities that decreased the most were ore (-60.7%), other bulk (grab) (-34.5%), and containerized cargo (-33.5%).

    Murmansk accounted for 62.4% of the aggregate cargo throughput via the Russian Arctic basin sea ports in April. Sabetta handled 29.8%, and Varandey 4.4% of the total.
