Russia’s governmental port property management agency Rosmorport has announced a tender to build two innovative double-fuel 12-14 MWt icebreakers.
The vessels of the Project 23620 will have the Icebreaker 7 ice class notation and will be capable of breaking ice up to 1.5 meter thick. They will be able to be deployed year-round in the Baltic, Barents, and White Seas and in the Pacific basin.
These will be the first vessels of the type to be built in Russia, Project 23620 being the first Russian-made double-fuel icebreaker design utilizing a LNG-powered propulsion unit.
It is also the world’s first icebreaker project utilizing the DYNPOS-2 dynamic positioning technology.
Rosmorport is to build 10 new icebreakers by 2027 under the Comprehensive infrastructure modernization and development plan.
