Arctic Basin Ports’ Throughput in February 2021: Ore Up

    According to SeaNews PORTSTAT analytic online service, the total cargo throughput via the Russian Arctic basin ports in February 2021 decreased by 5.3% year-on-year. Cabotage declined by 14.3%. Import surged 9.9-fold. Export remained much on the previous year’s level.

    The share of the Arctic basin in the total cargo traffic via all the Russian seaports in February 2021 amounted to 11.4%.

    48.4% of the total cargo traffic was crude oil, LNG accounted for 21.1% and coal and coke for 14.7%.

    The highest growth was in the metal scrap (up 5.3-fold), ore (+99.6%) and reefer cargo (+14.5%).

    The commodities that decreased the most were other bulk (grab) (-98.9%), ferrous metals (-52.8%), and piece cargo (-36.9%).

    Murmansk accounted for 61.6% of the aggregate cargo throughput via the Russian Arctic basin sea ports in February. Sabetta handled 29%, and Varandey 5.6% of the total.
