Modernization Planned in Shakhtersk Port

  • The coal port of Shakhtersk on the island of Sakhalin is to be modernized. As a result, the port capacity will almost double up to 20 mn tons per annum by 2025, the regional government reports.

    The project envisages building an automated coal warehouse for 3 mn tons and installing new technology lines with stacker reclaimers. To protect the environment, new conveyor belts with dust control systems will be installed.

    Last year, the port of Shakhtersk handled 10.7 mn tons of coal, 21% above the 20419 result. Most of the coal is designated for the APR countries including China, Korea and India.

    After completing the modernization project, the port hopes to expand exports to Thailand, Viet Nam, Malaysia and the Philippines.
