Container Traffic via Arctic Basin Ports in January 2021 Down 2.7%

    According to SeaNews PORTSTAT analytic online service, the total container throughput via the Arctic basin ports in January 2021 decreased by 2.7% year-on-year. Cabotage, which accounts for the major share of the total, declined by 3%. Export dropped 80%. Import, on the contrary, surged 15.3-fold.

    The share of the Arctic basin in the total container traffic via all the Russian seaports in January 2021 amounted to 2.7%.

    Laden container throughput in the Arctic decreased by 4.3% year-on-year. Reefer containers accounted for 3.4% of the total laden container traffic, and dry containers for 96.6%. Cabotage made 99.9% of all the laden containers, and exports accounted for 0.1%.

    Empty container traffic grew by 0.5%.

    The port of Dudinka accounted for 42.2% of the aggregate container throughput via the Russian Arctic basin sea ports in January. Murmansk handled 35.8% of the total, and Arkhangelsk 19.4%.
