Russian Railways’ Container Traffic Up 16% in 2020

  • Russian Railways have reported a 15.9% year-on-year increase in rail container traffic during 2020. All in all, 5.8 mn TEU was carried during the period under report.

    Domestic container traffic grew by 11.6% up to 2.3 mn TEU, export was up 13.5% to some 1.5 mn TEU, import up 15.6% to 1.2 mn TEU, and transit up 37.6% to more than 800 thousand TEU.

    Laden container traffic made circa 4 mn TEU, up 17.8% year-on-year.

    Commodity-wise, containerized fruit, vegetables and potatoes grew the most, up 62.5% to 7.8 thousand TEU. Ferrous metals were up 46.2% to 205.8 thousand TEU, non-ferrous ore and raw sulphur up 44.7% to 29.5 thousand TEU, and other foodstuffs up 33.1% to 166.5 thousand TEU.

    Consumer goods transportation increased by 28.5% up to 398.2 thousand TEU, chemicals and soda grew by 24.2% year-on-year up to 700.8 thousand TEU

    Containerized timber and woodwork were up 5.4% to 540.5 thousand TEU, paper by 14.3% up to 354.9 thousand TEU.

    Containerized machinery, equipment and engines were up 28.9% to 297.1 thousand TEU, hardware up 17% up to 336.8 thousand TEU, non-ferrous metals up 28.5% to 147.3 thousand TEU, construction cargo up 12.4% to 127.1 thousand TEU.

    Containerized chemical and mineral fertilizers grew by 9.4% year-on-year up to 41.8 thousand TEU, other and LCL cargo by 21.3% up to 132.8 thousand TEU.

    Containerized grain was up 49.2% to 12.1 thousand TEU, salt up 2.5% to 1.4 thousand TEU, sugar up 36.1% to 4 thousand TEU, meal and flour up 9.5% to 10.7 thousand TEU.

    Vehicles and parts were down 1.1% to 246.8 thousand TEU, oil and products down 6.8% to 81.2 thousand TEU, metal structures down 9.3% to 16.5 thousand TEU, and fish down 1% to 21.8 thousand TEU.
