Caspian Basin Ports’ Throughput in November 2020: Grain Throughput Up

    According to SeaNews PORTSTAT analytic online service, the total cargo throughput via the Caspian basin ports in November 2020 grew by 8.6% year-on-year. Import was up 10.4%, and export up 25%. Cabotage surged by 55.7%. Transit, on the contrary, declined by 3.7%.

    The share of the Caspian basin in the total cargo traffic via all the Russian seaports in November 2020 made 0.85%.

    55% of the total cargo traffic was crude oil, grain accounted for 21.5% and timber and logs for 8%.

    It should be noted that the highest growth was in other bulk (suction) (up 10.7-fold), reefer cargo (up 3.3-fold) and grain segment (+45.1%).

    The commodities that decreased were Ro-Ro (-75%), other bulk (grab) (-74.7%) and piece cargo (-20.3%).

    Makhachkala accounted for 57.3% of the aggregate cargo throughput via the Russian Caspian basin sea ports in November. Astrakhan handled 36.6%, and Olya 6.1% of the total.
