Russian Railways’ Cargo Loading Still Down

  • During January-October 2020, Russian Railways loaded 1,031.9 mn tons of cargo, down 3.2% year-on-year.

    Coal loading declined by 6.5% down to 288.9 mn tons. Oil and products, Russian Railways’ second most important cargo in terms of volume, decreased by 9.8% down to 172.9 mn tons. Ferrous and manganese ore was slightly up by 0.1% to 99.9 mn tons.

    Ferrous metals were down 10.2% to 55 mn tons, timber and logs down 2.6% to 34.6 mn tons, soda and chemicals down 6.6% to 20.2 mn tons, cement down 6.3% to 21.7 mn tons, ferrous metal scrap down 8.5% to 11.6 mn tons, and industrial and forming materials down 4.9% down to 28.2 mn tons.

    Construction cargo was up 7% to 113.6 mn tons, chemical and mineral fertilizers up 2.8% to 51.9 mn tons, non-ferrous ore and raw sulfur up 2.7% to 16.9 mn tons, grain up 25.8% to 21.5 mn tons, and coke loading up 3.3% to 9.3 mn tons.

    Rail cargo throughput during January-October made 2,100 bn tons per km, down 3.2% year-on-year.

    In October, Russian Railways loaded 223.2 mn tons of cargo, up 0.4% year-on-year. Cargo throughput amounted to 282.5 bn tons per km, up 0.2% year-on-year.
