Russia Develops Optimized Floating Power Unit for Hot Climate

  • Iceberg Central Design Bureau has developed a design of an Optimized Floating Power Unit (OFPU), a sistership of the “Akademik Lomonosov” floating power unit that was commissioned in May this year in Chukotka in the Russian Arctic.

The OFPU is a non-self-propelled vessel to be towed to the installation area by tugboats or delivered on board a specialized semi-submersible vessel. It needs shore-based infrastructure including hydraulic facilities and berths.

According to Iceberg, the OFPU has a simpler design than “Akademik Lomonosov”, it has an optimized set of onboard equipment, and needs fewer personnel to operate it, while its power capacity will be larger than that of “Akademik Lomonosov”.

The OFPU is to be equipped with two RITM-200 nuclear reactors, which will bring its power capacity to 100 MWt to supply consumers plus energy to maintain the vessel’s own operations.

The power block is designed for operating in hot climatic conditions with air temperature up to 47 degrees Centigrade and water up to 40 degrees Centigrade.

The OFPU can stand an earthquake with a magnitude of up to 9 and a wind up to 50 meters per hour.
