Russia Imports More Cocoa and Chocolate in Q1 2020

    According to SeaNews Russian Foreign Trade Customs Statistics online service, in Q1 2020 Russia imported 75.7 thousand tons of cocoa and cocoa products (+6% year-on-year) worth $289.1 mn (+5.5%).

    Import of chocolate and other readymade food products containing cocoa increased by 3% up to 31 thousand tons. In monetary terms, by contrast, chocolate and readymade cocoa products import decreased by 1.4% down to $135.8 mn. The major exporters were Germany, Poland, Italy, Belarus and Belgium.

    Cocoa beans import grew by 34.2% to make 15.3 thousand tons worth $45.5 mn (+52.7%). Almost all of them were shipped to Russia from Côte d’Ivoire, Nigeria, Ecuador, Ghana and Peru.

    Import of cocoa powder decreased by 5.2% down to 11 thousand tons remaining level with last year’s figure and thus making $22.4 mn. The largest shipments came from Malaysia, Germany, Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana, Indonesia and the Netherlands.

    The largest exporters of cocoa pasta to Russia in the first quarter of 2020 were Côte d’Ivoire, Ukraine and Ghana. During the reporting period, import of cocoa pasta made 10.3 thousand tons (-2.8%) worth $34.7 mn (-8%).

    Import of cocoa butter amounted to 8.3 thousand tons (+7.8%) worth $50.7 mn (+9.3%). The main exporting countries were Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, China and Côte d’Ivoire.

     

    During the first quarter of 2020, cocoa and cocoa products were imported to Russia from 74 countries, Germany and Cote d’Ivoire being the main exporters.

    Côte d’Ivoire exported to Russia 15.1 thousand tons of cocoa and cocoa products, up 22.8% year-on-year, worth $47.5 mn (+33.4%). Most of the import was cocoa beans and cocoa paste.

    Imports from Germany decreased by 11.5% down to 10.8 thousand tons. In monetary terms, it declined by 6.2% to $52.6 mn. Russia was mainly importing chocolate and other finished products containing cocoa, as well as cocoa powder.
