Russian Railways’ Cargo Loading Drops 19% in May

  • During January-April 2020, Russian Railways loaded 508 mn tons of cargo, down 4.5% year-on-year.

    Coal loading declined by 11% down to 141.7 mn tons. Oil and products, Russian Railways’ second most important cargo in terms of volume, decreased by 5.3% down to 91.9 mn tons. Ferrous and manganese ore was down slightly by 0.4% to 49.8 mn tons.

    Ferrous metals were down 10.9% to 28.7 mn tons, timber and logs down 5.9% to 17.6 mn tons, soda and chemicals down 5.1% to 10.5 mn tons, cement down 8.8% to 8.8 mn tons, and ferrous metal scrap down 10% to 5 mn tons.

    Coke loading declined by 1.9% down to 4.5 mn tons, industrial and forming materials by 8.4% down to 12.8 mn tons.

    Construction cargo was up 4.2% to 51.1 mn tons, chemical and mineral fertilizers up 1.9% to 25.9 mn tons, non-ferrous ore and raw sulfur up 1.4% to 8.2 mn tons, grain up 14.9% to 9.6 mn tons.

    Rail cargo throughput during January-May made 1,040.4  bn tons per km, down 5.5% year-on-year.

    In May, Russian Railways loaded 100.5 mn tons of cargo, down 19.9 year-on-year. Cargo throughput amounted to 209.9 bn on per km, down 6.6% year-on-year.
