Azov and Black Sea Basin Throughput in March: Grain Up

  • According to SeaNews PORTSTAT analytic online service, the total cargo throughput via the Azov and Black Sea basin ports in March 2020 grew by 19.2% year-on-year. Export was up 23.2%, transit up 12%, and cabotage increased by 34.4%. Import, on the contrary, declined by 20.2%.

    The share of the Azov and Black Sea basin in the total cargo traffic via all the Russian seaports in March 2020 amounted to 33.1%.

    More than half of the total was oil and products, with crude oil accounting for 36.8% of the overall throughput, and oil products for 22.3%. Grain have the third largest share in the aggregate throughput amounting to 17%.

    It should be noted that the highest growth was in the grain segment (+77.6%), liquid foodstuffs (+58%) and chemical and mineral fertilizers (+53%).

    The commodities that decreased the most were timber and logs cargo (-76.1%), Ro-Ro (-56.5%) and metal scrap (-46.1%).

    Novorossiysk accounted for 60.1% of the aggregate cargo throughput via the Russian Azov and Black basin sea ports in March. Tuapse handled 10.7%, and Taman 9.3% of the total.
