Arctic Basin Ports’ Throughput: Coal and Coke Down

  • According to SeaNews PORTSTAT analytic online service, the total cargo throughput via the Russian Arctic basin ports in February 2020 declined by 7.8%. Import dropped by 92.7%, and export was down 13.3%. Cabotage, on the contrary, increased by 3.5%.

    The share of the Arctic basin in the total cargo traffic via all the Russian seaports in February 2020 amounted to 12.2%.

    51% of the total cargo traffic was crude oil, LNG accounted for 20% and coal and coke for 13.9%.

    It should be noted that the highest growth was in the piece cargo segment (up 4.1-fold), other general cargo (+98%) and reefer cargo (+96.3%).

    The commodities that decreased the most were ore (-44.5%), coal and coke (-27.3%) and oil product (-21%).

    Murmansk accounted for 58.2% of the aggregate cargo throughput via the Russian Arctic basin sea ports in February. Sabetta handled 20.2%, and Varandey 7.1% of the total.
