Russian Railways’ Container Traffic Up Year-on-Year and Down Month-on-Month in February

  • Russian Railways have reported a 15.3% year-on-year increase in rail container traffic during January-February 2020. All in all, 683.7 thousand TEU was carried during the period under report.

    Laden container traffic made 562 thousand TEU, up 15.4% year-on-year.

    Commodity-wise, containerized non-ferrous ore and raw sulkphur grew the most, up 2.1-fold to 2.2 thousand TEU. Chemicals and soda were up 39.1% to 110.1 thousand TEU.

    Timber and woodwork transportation  increased by 7.9% year-on-year up to 78.5 thousand TEU, paper by 10.1% to 60 thousand TEU, vehicles and parts by 8.5% up to 38 thousand TEU, machinery, equipment and engines by 16.9% up to 36.6 thousand TEU.

    Ferrous metals grew by 29.2% up to 27.2 thousand TEU, non-ferrous metals by 23% up to 20.1 thousand TEU, oil and products by 18.1% up to 14.4 thousand TEU, hardware by 5.6% up to 44.3 thousand TEU, and consumer goods by 8.1% up to 51.3 thousand TEU.

    Metal structures were up 9.3% to 2.1 thousand TEU, and ‘other’ and LCL cargo up 17.8% up to 18.2 thousand TEU.

    Chemical and mineral fertilizers declined by 4.9% down to 6.5 thousand TEU, construction cargo by 3% down to 14.7 thousand TEU.

    In February, overall containerized traffic in the Russian Railways’ network amounted to 428.7 thousand TEU, up 31.6% year-on-year and down 1.4% month-on-month.
