Russian Railways’ Container Traffic

TransContainer Posts Traffic Growth

  • TransContainer has published its operational statistics for the first quarter of 2019.

The company carried 492.2 thousand TEU in Q1, up 7.7% year-on-year. International container traffic was up 8.9%, export up 2%, import up 17.4% and transit up 13.4%.

Domestic traffic, which makes 45,2% of the aggregate volume carried by TransContainer, increased by 6.3% up to 222.4 thousand TEU.

The overall growth of the Russian rail container market during Q1 2019 made 15.4% year-on-year. TransContainer explains lagging behind the market by the lower growth of the company’s own empty container traffic, which made just 3.9% compared to the overall market growth of empties of 26.6%.

Container handling at the terminals operated by TransContainer amounted in Q1 to 335 thousand TEU, up 19.1% year-on-year, which was due to both the overall market trends as well as the acquisition of Logistika-Terminal completed in Q3 2018.
