Russian Far East Basin Ports’ Throughput in May 2021: Non-Ferrous Metals Up

    According to SeaNews PORTSTAT analytic online service, the total cargo throughput via the Russian Far East basin ports in May 2021 remained much on the previous year’s level. That said, transit grew by 17.8%, import surged by 63.6%. Export declined by 0.7%, and cabotage by 18.8%.

    The share of the Far East basin in the total cargo traffic via all the Russian seaports in May 2021 amounted to 28.8%.

    More than 75% in the Russian Far Eastern ports’ commodity structure is coal, oil and products. In May 2021, coal and coke accounted for 50.9% of the total volume, crude oil for 20.7% and oil products for 5.9%. Containerized cargo constituted 9% of the total.

    It should be noted that the highest growth rate was in the chemical and mineral fertilizers segment (up 14-fold), other bulk (suction) (up 2.2-fold) and non-ferrous metals (+74.3%).

    The commodities that decreased the most were grain (-67.4%), timber and logs (-42.3%) and ferry cargo (-32.5%).

    Vostochny accounted for 32.2% of the aggregate cargo throughput via the Russian Far East basin sea ports in May. Vanino handled 15.4%, and Vladivostok 12.1% of the total.
