Russian Ports’ Throughput in May 2021: Metal Scrap Up

    According to SeaNews PORTSTAT analytic online service, the total cargo throughput of the Russian sea ports in May 2021 increased by 0.5% year-on-year.

    Transit grew by 9.9%, import by 24.4%. Export was down 0.7%, cabotage declined by 7.6%.

    Almost 50% in the Russian sea ports’ commodity structure was oil and products. In May, crude oil accounted for 28.8% of the total volume and oil products for 17.8%. Coal and coke constituted 26.1% of the total.

    It should be noted that the highest growth was in the Ro-Ro segment (+69%), metal scrap (+50.1%) and other general cargo (+16.9%).

    The commodities that decreased the most were foodstuffs (-48%), liquid chemicals (-44.4%) and ferry cargo (-36.4%).

    The Baltic basin accounted for 30.6% of the aggregate cargo throughput via the Russian sea ports in May. The Azov and Black Sea basin handled 28.9%, the Far Eastern basin accounted for 28.8%, the Arctic basin for 10.9% and the Caspian basin for 0.9% of the total.
