First Train Arrives at Lavna Port

  • The railway line from the station of Vyhodnoy to the sea port of Lavna in Murmansk region has been open for trains. The ceremony was held on December 15 on the bridge across the Tuloma River. President Vladimir Putin gave the start to operations of the new railway line, Rostransmodernizarsiya, the state customer of the railway construction, has reported.

The RF Government ordered to complete the construction of the railway line to the port of Lavna under construction in the Russian Arctic in late 2022. The project is financed from the federal budget.

The railway line is almost 50 kilometers long and has 137 artificial structures including 11 bridges and overpasses. Every day, almost 2.5 thousand people and more than 250 machines and equipment were deployed building the line.

The bridge over the Tuloma River is one of the most complicated engineering structures. It is the largest bridge behind the Polar Circle, more than 1,313 meters long, consisting of eight spans and two onshore trestles. The highest point of the bridge is 55 meters above the water level.

The inauguration of the Vykhodnoy – Lavna railway line makes it possible to deliver cargo to the new port. The new line is planned to become fully operational in 2024. It will have an annual capacity of 18 million tons.

The new port of Lavna is deepwater, with a depth of up to 15 meters near the coast, which allows for handling large-tonnage vessels. Moreover, the port does not freeze in winter so vessels that will call at Lavna will not need icebreakers to assist them.
