In January-August 2023, the sales of new cars and light commercial vehicles in Russia increased by 29.5% year-on-year to make 610.7 thousand units.
Starting from June 2023, the Association of European Businesses (AEB) press release has been supplemented with sales data provided by PPC JSC (Passport industrial consulting), including, among other things, sales volumes not included in AEB statistics. The AEB expects that this will make it possible to give a more objective assessment of the state of the new car sales market and its dynamics.
Alexey Kalitsev, Chairman of the AEB Automobile Manufacturers Committee, commented: “The volume of the Russian market for new passenger cars and light commercial vehicles in August 2023, including alternative imports, exceeded 110,000 vehicles for the first time in a year and a half, which is a clear sign of its recovery, and confirms our forecast of 1 million sold vehicles by the end of the year.”
In August 2023, new cars and light commercial vehicles sales in the Russian market surged 2.3-fold year-on-year amounting to 111.3 thousand units. Month-on-month growth was 10.9%.
However, it should be noted that PPC (and, resultingly, now, AEB) data do not include statistics on the sales of BMW, Changan, Chery, Exeed, Evolute, Geely, Mercedes-Benz, Mercedes-Benz vans, MINI, smart, and Omoda in Russia.
Most of the Top 5 car brands in Russia saw their sales grow.
Lada remained the leader of the Russian car market in August 2023 with its sales up 84.2% year-on-year to 33.3 thousand units.
China’s Haval remained the second with 11.2 thousand units sold, up 3.7-fold year-on-year.
Russia’s GAZ commercial vehicles rated the third with 5.3 thousand units sold, up 81.4% year-on-year.
Another Russian brand, UAZ rates the fourth with its sales growing 42.2% in August to more than 3.5 thousand units.
One more Chinese brand Tank, a crossover division of Great Wall, is in the fifth position with its sales making 1.7 thousand units, same as in July.
Most of the brands sold in the Russian market demonstrated a negative trend in August 2023, the few exceptions apart from the brands in the Top 5 being China’s FAW (up 6.2-fold), GAC (up 5.2-fold), and Great Wall (up 3.5-fold).
Other brands saw their sales decline significantly.
