Freight Traffic via Saimaa Canal Up 27%

  • Freight traffic via the Saimaa Canal grew by 27.4% year-on-year during January-April 2021 making 135.8 thousand tons.

    According to the Statistics Finland, 79 vessel transited the Canal during the period under report, up 33.9% year-on-year. Two of them were flying the Russian flag.

    The main commodity transported was timber and logs, which grew 2.1-fold up to 44.4 thousand tons. Other commodities included construction cargo (down 11.2% to 28.3 thousand tons), fertilizers (up 63.6% to 15.5 thousand tons), and paper (down 19.7% to 15.3 thousand tons).

    The Saimaa Canal was closed for scheduled maintenance from February 8 till March 22 this year.
