Far East Basin Ports’ Throughput in May 2020: Grain Up

    According to SeaNews PORTSTAT analytic online service, the total cargo throughput via the Russian Far East basin ports in May 2020 increased by 12.4% year-on-year. Import was up 5.6% and export up 14.3%. Transit declined by 20.7% and cabotage by 1.2%.

    The share of the Far East basin in the total cargo traffic via all the Russian seaports in May 2020 amounted to 28.9%.

    More than 75% in the Russian Far Eastern ports’ commodity structure is coal, oil and products. In May, coal and coke accounted for 48.2% of the total volume, crude oil for 22.9% and oil products for 6.5%. Containerized cargo constituted 7.6% of the total.

    It should be noted that the highest growth rate was in the grain segment (up 2.5-fold), piece cargo (+67.6%) and other general cargo (+50.6%).

    The commodities that decreased the most were chemical and mineral fertilizers (-71.3%), other bulk (suction) (-49.6%) and metal scrap (-33.9%).

    Vostochny accounted for 33.6% of the aggregate cargo throughput via the Russian Far East basin sea ports in May. Vanino handled 16.3%, and Nakhodka 10.9% of the total.
