Arctic Basin Ports’ Throughput in April 2020: Coal and Coke Down

    According to SeaNews PORTSTAT analytic online service, the total cargo throughput via the Russian Arctic basin ports in April 2020 declined by 3.4%. Import decreased by 15%, and cabotage was down 9.8%. Export, on the contrary, grew by 1.2%.

    The share of the Arctic basin in the total cargo traffic via all the Russian seaports in April 2020 amounted to 11.3%.

    47.1% of the total cargo traffic was crude oil, LNG accounted for 20.4% and coal and coke for 14.1%.

    The highest growth was in the other bulk (grab) segment (up 9.9-fold), ore (up 3.8-fold) and metal scrap (up 2.4-fold).

    The commodities that decreased the most were non-ferrous metals (-30.3%), oil products (-29.1%) and coal and coke (-25.6%).

    Murmansk accounted for 60.8% of the aggregate cargo throughput via the Russian Arctic basin sea ports in April. Sabetta handled 29%, and Varandey 5% of the total.
