October Railway Tests Smart Contract

  • October (Oktyabrskaya) Railway is implementing a pilot project using the smart contract technology. By the end of this year, October Railway plans to carry out the first cargo transportation with the full application of this technology.

    Since the beginning of the experiment, the Railway specialists have been studying the operational functionality of smart contract.

    At the first stage of the project, which began in 2018, integration with the corporate automated systems of Russian Railways was carried out to draw up a scheme of actions and obtain primary data.

    In 2019, more than 40 technological operations involved in the transportation process were implemented, including providing information about the delivery process for all parties in the smart contract.

    On July 11, 2019, a test shipment was made using the implemented smart contract operations between Predportovaya and Novy Port stations. In addition, last year block trains were sent between Predportovaya and Avtovo stations, Nigozero and Novy Port, Nigozero and Avtovo, and Pitkäranta and Novy Port stations using elements of the smart contract technology.

    This year the smart contract technology functionality in use is to be expanded, and the number of terminals participating in the project will increase.
