Rail Container Traffic in Russia Continues to Grow

  • Russian Railways have reported a 12.4% year-on-year increase in rail container traffic during January-Aril 2020. All in all, 1.8 mn TEU was carried during the period under report.

    Laden container traffic made 1.16 mn TEU, up 11.9% year-on-year.

    Commodity-wise, containerized fruit, vegetables and potatoes grew the most, up 52.8% to 2.6 thousand TEU. Non-ferrous ore and raw sulphur was up 47.8% to 7.9 thousand TEU, ferrous metals up 40.5% up to 59.8 thousand TEU, salt up 37.5% to 0.5 thousand TEU, chemicals and soda up 32.9% to 224.5 thousand TEU.

    Timber and woodwork transportation increased by 1.8% year-on-year up to 170.3 thousand TEU, paper by 9.9% to 119 thousand TEU, consumer goods by 10.3% up to 96.3 thousand TEU, non-ferrous metals by 21.7% up to 43 thousand TEU, construction cargo by 2.6% to 34.2 thousand TEU, oil and products by 11.4% up to 30.4 thousand TEU, and metal structures by 1.2% up to 4.4 thousand TEU.

    Containerized agricultural produce demonstrated an upward trend. Thus, grain was up 2.1% to 3.1 thousand TEU, flour and ground cereals up 30% to 3.6 thousand TEU, sugar up 1.4% to 0.85 thousand TEU, other food products up 32% to 44.8 thousand TEU.

    Hardware was down 0.6% to 64.1 thousand TEU, vehicles and parts down 10.5% to 69.6 thousand TEU, chemical and mieral fertilizers down 8% to 13 thousand TEU, fish down 3.6% to 7.1 thousand TEU.

    In April, laden container traffic in the Russian Railways’ network amounted to some 301.5 thousand TEU, up 9.1% year-on-year and up 1.7% month-on-month.
