Cargo Traffic via the Caspian Basin Ports in March

Caspian Basin Ports’ Throughput in March 2020: Grain Up 2.8-fold

    According to SeaNews PORTSTAT analytic online service, the total cargo throughput via the Caspian basin ports in March 2020 grew by 17.7% year-on-year. Import increased by 36.4%, and export by 44.1%. Transit was slightly down by 0.2%. Cabotage remained much on the previous year’s level.

    The share of the Caspian basin in the total cargo traffic via all the Russian seaports in March 2020 made 1%.

    48% of the total Caspian cargo traffic was crude oil, grain accounted for 33.3% and foodstuffs for 5.5%.

    It should be noted that the highest growth was in the grain (up 2.8-fold), containerized cargo (+48.3%) and other general cargo (+25.9%).

    The commodities that decreased were timber and logs (-64.3%) and foodstuffs (-28.4%).

    Makhachkala accounted for 63.9% of the aggregate cargo throughput via the Russian Caspian basin sea ports in March. Astrakhan handled 28.2%, and Olya 7.9% of the total.
