Ukrainian Ports’ Container Throughput

  • During January-May 2018, the sea ports of Ukraine handled slightly over 325 thousand TEU, up 36.9% year-on-year.

    By way of comparison, Russia’s largest Black Sea port of Novorossiysk handled some 363 thousand TEU during the same period.

    According to the Ukrainian Sea Ports Authority, export container traffic via the country’s ports made 156.8 thousand TEU, up 54.4% year-on-year. Import grew 30.2% up to 157.9 thousand TEU.

    Transit dropped 25.3% down to 10.3 thousand TEU. Cabotage was non-existent.

    Odessa handled 235.5 thousand TEU during the first quarter of 2018, up 11.7% year-on-year.

    Yuzhny also grew – up 40.2% to 37.3 thousand TEU.

    Chernomorsk (formerly known as Ilyichevsk) handled 51.9 thousand TEU compared to just 2 TEU in January-March 2017.

    All of these were handled by Ilyichevsk Sea Fishing Port, which previously was not included into the Ukrainian Sea Ports Authority’s statistics. According to SeaNews’ data, it grew 12.1% year-on-year.

    Olvia Specialized Sea Port (formerly, Oktyabrsk) handled 281 TEU increasing its last year’s January-May result 11.2-fold.
