Black Sea Freight Market, Week 51

  • Last week, freight rates for shipping wheat and coal by coasters went down in the Black Sea market.

According to Glogos Project brokers, freight rates for shipping wheat by coasters to the Sea of Marmara from NW Black Sea ports (Ukrainian Ilyichevsk, Yuzhny, Kherson, Odessa, Nikolaev) made $22 per ton, from W Black Sea ports (Varna, Burgas, Constanta) $20 per ton and from NE Black Sea (Novorossiysk) $21 per ton.

Freight rates for shipping metal scrap by coasters from NW Black Sea to the Sea of Marmara were $25 per ton.

Freight rates for shipping coal to the Sea of Marmara from W Black Sea ports made $18 per ton, and from Novorossiysk – $19 per ton.

According to Glogos Project, more and more vessels are opening on the last week of December in the Azov region.

The situation with excessive tonnage is exacerbated by the delay in transshipment programs of major exporters ahead of the upcoming holidays for various reasons, and the vessels that made transshipments on roads of Port Kavkaz now have to hunt for intermediate voyages. Ship owners already agree to work in practically all directions, both at long and short distances. However, there is considerably less firm cargo on the market at the moment than open vessels.

Charterers in the Azov region are trying to load grain cargoes (wheat, corn, barley) consigned for delivery to Turkish companies prior to December 29, 2017, in order to legalize the invoices and avoid delays at discharge. Most terminals are suspending their work from December 31 until January 2. For this reason, owners of vessels opening during this interim consider even shipping untypical for the sea-river type fleet requests from the Black and Mediterranean Seas.

We remind you that the rates cited in this article are average market rates. We ask our readers to pay attention that this information is not a commercial offer and cannot be an example for comparison in commercial disputes and arbitration proceedings.
