Azov and Black Sea Basin Throughput in December 2021: Coal and Coke Up

The total cargo throughput via the Azov and Black Sea basin ports in December 2021 increased by 8.1% year-on-year. Export grew by 4%, cabotage was up 11.6% and transit up 21.8%. Import, on the contrary, declined by 1.4%.

According to SeaNews PORTSTAT analytic online service, the share of the Azov and Black Sea basin in the total cargo traffic via all the Russian seaports in December 2021 amounted to 32%.

More than half of the total was oil and products, with crude oil accounting for 34.3% of the overall throughput, and oil products for 19.9%. Grain amount to 14.4%. Coal and coke constituted 13.9% of the total.

It should be noted that the highest growth was in the coal and coke segment (+69.3%), ro-ro (+61%), and foodstuffs (up 48.4%).

The commodities that decreased the most were metal scrap (-89.1%), piece cargo (-72.1%) and chemicals (-37.6%).

Novorossiysk accounted for 60.9% of the aggregate cargo throughput via the Russian Azov and Black basin sea ports in December. Taman handled 15.2%, and port Tuapse 6.8% of the total.
