Caspian Basin Ports’ Throughput in April 2021: Grain Down

    According to SeaNews PORTSTAT analytic online service, the total cargo throughput via the Caspian basin ports in April 2021 declined by 27.6% year-on-year. Transit was down 12.6%, export decreased by 49.1%, cabotage by 61%. Import, on the contrary, grew by 23%.

    The share of the Caspian basin in the total cargo traffic via all the Russian seaports in April 2021 made 0.8%.

    56% of the total cargo traffic was crude oil, grain accounted for 13.7% and liquid foodstuffs for 11.4%.

    It should be noted that the highest growth was in other bulk (grab) (up 5.5-fold), reefer cargo (up 3-fold) and ferrous metals (up 2.1-fold) segments.

    The commodities that decreased the most were grain (-70.7%), Ro-Ro (-65.2%) and other bulk (suction) (-50%).

    Makhachkala accounted for 60.7% of the aggregate cargo throughput via the Russian Caspian basin sea ports in April. Astrakhan handled 35.9%, and Olya 3.4% of the total.
