Far East Basin Ports’ Throughput in January 2021: Non-Ferrous Metals Up

    According to SeaNews PORTSTAT analytic online service, the total cargo throughput via the Russian Far East basin ports in January 2021 increased by 1.4% year-on-year. Export was up 2.5%, and import up 4.1%. Cabotage declined by 9.2%, and transit dropped by 37.4%.

    The share of the Far East basin in the total cargo traffic via all the Russian seaports in January 2021 amounted to 26.4%.

    More than 75% in the Russian Far Eastern ports’ commodity structure is coal, oil and products. In January 2021, coal and coke accounted for 44.8% of the total volume, crude oil for 24.9% and oil products for 6.4%. Containerized cargo constituted 7.9% of the total.

    It should be noted that the highest growth rate was in the non-ferrous metals segment (up 6.8-fold), other bulk (suction) (up 4.9-fold) and grain (up 4.5-fold).

    The commodities that decreased the most were chemical and mineral fertilizers (-50.5%), ferry cargo (-33.5%) and timber and logs (-23%).

    Vostochny accounted for 34.8% of the aggregate cargo throughput via the Russian Far East basin sea ports in January. Vanino handled 17.4%, and Nakhodka 12.3% of the total.
