Russian Railways’ Container Traffic Up

  • In 2017 Russian Railways carried 3,899.1 thousand TEU, up 18.9% compared to the 2016 result. In 2016, container traffic on the Russian railways network made 3.28 mn TEU (+10.5% compared to 2015).

    According to Russian Railways, in 2017 domestic container traffic grew 7.4% year-on-year to 1,805.6 thousand TEU, в transit surged 59.2% to 417.3 thousand TEU, export was up 20.1% to 968.4 thousand TEU and import up 33.2% to 707.8 thousand TEU.

    Loaded container transportation in 2017 amounted to 2,633.7 thousand TEU, which is 22.7% above the 2016 volume.

    Chemicals and soda traffic was up 13% to 452.6 thousand TEU, paper up 6% to 286.3 thousand TEU, timber and logs up 29.5% to 274.6 thousand TEU, consumer goods up 46.2% to 256.4 thousand TEU, foodstuffs up 13.9% to 109 thousand TEU.

    Wire and other hardware transportation grew 42.8% to 232.9 thousand TEU, cars grew 54.4% to 182.6 thousand TEU, machinery, equipment and engines grew 43% to 176.9 thousand TEU.

    Non-ferrous metals volume was up 8.4% to 112.2 thousand TEU, ferrous metals up 27.5% to 104.5 thousand TEU, construction cargo up 5,6% to 88 thousand TEU, oil and products up 2.5% to 82.2 thousand TEU, chemical and mineral fertilizers up 42.9% to 57.6 thousand TEU, LCL and other cargo up 5.5% to 85.6 thousand TEU.

    Containerized traffic made in total 37.4 mn tons of cargo, up 17.8% yuear-on-year.
