Russia Bans Fish and Seafood Import from Japan

  • The RF Service for Veterinary and Phytosanitary Supervision (Rosselkhoznadzor) has implemented a ban on the import of fish and seafood from Japan w.e.f. October 16.

    Thus Russia has joined China in implementing temporary restrictive measures for Japanese fish and seafood import till the latter provides comprehensive information to confirm the safety of its aqua industry products and their compliance with the standards of the Eurasian Economic Union and Rosselkhoznadzor analyses that information.

    These measures were triggered by Japan’s decision to release more than 1 mn tons of contaminated water from the Fukushima nuclear power plant reservoirs.

    While the Japanese authorities insisted that the water release presents no threat, the neighbouring countries including China objected. The Chinese Customs Authority banned all fish and seafood import from Japan w.e.f. August 24.
