Russian Transport Sector Freight Traffic Up 7% YoY in August 2023

  • During January-August 2023, cargo volume carried by all transport modes in the RF transport system was up 1.7% year-on-year to 5.79 bn tons.

    According to the RF Statistics Agency, the largest volume was carried by road, up 2.8% year-on-year to 4.19 bn tons.

    Rail freight increased by 0.8% year-on-year up to 828 mn tons.

    Pipeline traffic was down 3.1% year-on-year to 794.3 mn tons.

    Sea freight grew by 21.7% year-on-year up to 22.4 mn tons.

    Inland shipping volume decreased by 9.3% year-on-year down to 67.6 mn tons.

    Air transport carried some 300 thousand tons, down 30.5% year-on-year.

    In August 2023, the total cargo turnover of Russian transport grew by 6.9% month-on-month to 870.1 mn tons.
