Arctic Basin Ports’ Throughput in December 2021: Ore Down

  • The total cargo throughput via the Russian Arctic basin ports in December 2021 decreased by 6.6% year-on-year.

    The article is based on SeaNews PORTSTAT online service (available for SeaNews subsribers).

    According to SeaNews PORTSTAT analytic online service, export declined by 13.2%, and import by 48.1%. Cabotage, on the contrary, was up 7.6%.

    The share of the Arctic basin in the total cargo traffic via all the Russian seaports in December 2021 amounted to 10.8%.

    44.4% of the total cargo traffic was crude oil, LNG accounted for 24.5% and coal and coke for 12.8%.

    The highest growth was in the other bulk (grab) (up 15.4-fold), other general cargo (up 2-fold) and ferrous metals (+71.7%).

    The commodities that decreased the most were timber and logs (-57.7%), metal scrap (-57.1%), and ore (-41.3%).

    Murmansk accounted for 54.6% of the aggregate cargo throughput via the Russian Arctic basin sea ports in December. Sabetta handled 32.9%, and Varandey 5.4% of the total.
