Container Throughput via Ukrainian Ports Down 2.5% in 2021

  • In 2021, the sea ports of Ukraine handled 1.02 mn TEU, down 2.5% year-on-year.

    By way of comparison, Russia’s largest Black Sea port of Novorossiysk during 2021 handled 835.1 thousand TEU growing by 6.6%.

    According to the Ukrainian Sea Ports Administration, export container traffic via the Ukrainian sea ports made 447.8 thousand TEU, down 3.6% year-on-year.

    Import decreased by 1.7% down to 500.8 thousand TEU. Transit container traffic via the major Ukrainian ports declined by 1.7% down to 43.5 thousand TEU. Cabotage made 568 TEU.

    Odessa is the only major Ukrainian port that demonstrated growth in 2021 with 671.5 thousand TEU handled, up 2.9% year-on-year.

    Container traffic via Pivdenniy (formerly, Yuzhny) decreased by 2.1% to make 238.6 thousand TEU.

    Chernomorsk (formerly known as Ilyichevsk) handled 112.2 thousand TEU, down 26.5% year-on-year.

    Olvia Specialized Sea Port (formerly, Oktyabrsk) handled 211 TEU, down 58.9% year-on-year.
