Far East Basin Ports’ Throughput in September 2021: Reefer Cargo Up

  • The total cargo throughput via the Russian Far East basin ports in September 2021 increased by 0.4% year-by-year. According to SeaNews PORTSTAT analytic online service, transit grew by 13.5%, cabotage by 20.6%, and import was up 30.7%. Export, on the contrary, declined by 3%.

    The share of the Far East basin in the total cargo traffic via all the Russian seaports in September 2021 amounted to 27.6%.

    More than 75% in the Russian Far Eastern ports’ commodity structure is coal, oil and products. In September 2021, coal and coke accounted for 47.4% of the total volume, crude oil for 22.4% and oil products for 5.4%. Containerized cargo constituted 9.3% of the total.

    It should be noted that the highest growth rate was in the chemical and mineral fertilizers segment (up 2.6-fold), reefer cargo (up 2.3-fold) and Ro-Ro (+61.4%).

    The commodities that decreased the most were other bulk (suction) (-98.1%), non-ferrous metals (-72.4%) and ferry cargo (-28.6%).

    Vostochny accounted for 34.8% of the aggregate cargo throughput via the Russian Far East basin sea ports in September. Vanino handled 16.2%, and Vladivostok 13.7% of the total.
