October 25, the crew of the RF Navy large anti-submarine ship “Vice-Admiral Kulakov” prevented a piracy attack on the “MSC Lucia” container ship in the Gulf of Guinea.
On receiving a SOS signal from the Panama-flagged container ship en route from Togo to Cameroon, the Russian destroyer sent a Ka-27PS helicopter with a team of Marine Corps.
The crew of “MSC Lucia” after sending an alert signal hid in the engine room following the instruction.
When the helicopter approached the container vessel the pirates left the board and fled in a high-speed boat heading to the shore.
The “Vice-Admiral Kulakov” meanwhile approached the container ship and dispatched an anti-terror group to survey the vessel.
A group of the Navy ships consisting of the large anti-submarine ship “Vice-Admiral Kulakov”, the tanker “Akademic Pashin” and the rescue tugboat “Altay” has been patrolling the Gulf of Guinea for three weeks now ensuring the security of merchant shipping.
