Negative Trend in Russian Car Market Continues – AEB

  • According to the Association of European Businesses (AEB) statistics, the sales of new cars and light commercial vehicles in Russia during January-September 2021 increased by 15.1% year-on-year to make 1.3 mn units. In September alone, 119.5 thousand cars and light commercial vehicles were sold, down 22.6% year-on-year and up 4.7% month-on-month.

“In September 2021 only 119 485 new cars and LCV’s were sold which demonstrates the market decrease at the level of -22,6%. As expected, the negative trend continues, although 3 quarters 2021 result still shows a 15,1% vs. same period 2020 with 1 260 111 sold new cars and LCV’s. The known strong car deficit in the market, linked to production shortage and the worldwide semi-conductor problem as well as other new disturbing influencers like energy crisis in China and Great Britain, rise of raw material cost and others will support the negative trend also during the next months. The market situation is very uncertain at the moment, but the AMC will try to revise its market forecast 2021 in November,” Thomas Staertzel, Chairman of the AEB Automobile Manufacturers Committee, commented.

Lada remained the leader of the Russian car market in September 2021 with its sales down 51.3% year-on-year to 17.2 thousand units.

Toyota moved up to the fourth position with its sales up 18.2% year-on-year to more than 10 thousand units.

Volkswagen ranked the fourth, its sales declined by 27.4% year-on-year down to 7.8 thousand units.

The brands that increased their sales the most were Chevrolet commercial vehicles (up 3.3-fold), Genesis (up 2.7-fold), Haval (up 2.5-fold) и Chery (up 2.3-fold).
