Freight Traffic via Saimaa Canal Up 54%

  • Freight traffic via the Saimaa Canal grew by 54.3% year-on-year during the first quarter of 2021 making 73.2 thousand tons.

    According to the Statistics Finland, 41 vessel transited the Canal during the period under report, up 57.7% year-on-year.

    The main commodity transported was timber and logs, which grew 2.8-fold up to 30.1 thousand tons. Other commodities included construction cargo (up 13.8% to 13.8 thousand tons), fertilizers (up 63.3% to 16.6 thousand tons), and paper (up 35.8% to 8.6 thousand tons).

    The Saimaa Canal was closed for scheduled maintenance from February 8 till March 22 this year.
