Russian Transport System Cargo in 2020: Sea Freight Up

  • During 2020, cargo volume carried by all transport modes in the RF transport system was down 6% year-on-year to 7.8 bn tons.

    According to the RF Statistics Agency, the largest volume was carried by road, down 6.2% year-on-year to 5.4 bn tons.

    Rail cargo declined by 2.7% year-on-year down to 1.2 bn tons.

    Pipeline traffic was down 8.4% year-on-year to 1.06 bn tons.

    Sea freight increased by 32.8% year-on-year up to 24.6 mn tons.

    Inland shipping volume decreased by 7.8% year-on-year down to 99.3 mn tons.

    Air transport carried 1.16 mn tons, up 2.2% year-on-year.

    In December rail cargo and pipeline traffic increased month-on-month. Cargo transportation by other modes of transport declined. Inland shipping volume decreased the most significantly.
