Container Traffic via Ukrainian Ports in January-November 2020

  • Container Traffic via Ukrainian Ports is approaching the 1 million TEU mark. In 2019, the Ukrainian ports handled more than 1 million TEU, 19% more than in 2018. In January-November this year, their throughput made 952.2 thousand TEU, up 4.6% year-on-year.

    By way of comparison, Russia’s largest Black Sea port of Novorossiysk during January-November 2020 handled 687.6 thousand TEU growing by 2.7%.

    Imports accounted for 48.6% of all the containers, exports 47.1%. According to the Ukrainian Sea Ports Administration, export container traffic via the Ukrainian sea ports made 448.8 thousand TEU, up 4.4% year-on-year.

    Import increased by 3.7% up to 462.6 thousand TEU. Transit container traffic via the major Ukrainian ports grew by 17.5% up to 41.2 thousand TEU. Cabotage was non-existent.

    For the first time since April the port of Odessa saw its throughput decline handling  590.8 thousand TEU in January-November, down 0.3% year-on-year.

    Container traffic via Pivdenniy (formerly, Yuzhny) increased by 15.7% to make 223.5 thousand TEU.

    Chernomorsk (formerly known as Ilyichevsk) handled 137.7 thousand TEU, up 10.1% year-on-year.

    Olvia Specialized Sea Port (formerly, Oktyabrsk) handled 506 TEU, up 3.4-fold year-on-year.
