Caspian Basin Ports’ Throughput in August 2020 Up 7.9%

    According to SeaNews PORTSTAT analytic online service, the total cargo throughput via the Caspian basin ports in August 2020 grew by 7.9% year-on-year. Cabotage surged 4.5-fold, export was up 19.7%. Transit decreased by 5.6%, import by 23.9%.

    The share of the Caspian basin in the total cargo traffic via all the Russian seaports in August 2020 made 1%.

    55.1% of the total cargo traffic was crude oil, grain accounted for 21.3% and timber and logs for 7.6%.

    It should be noted that the highest growth was in liquid foodstuffs segment (up 6.8-fold), grain (+36.7%) and other general cargo (+30.6%).

    The commodities that decreased the most were ferrous metals (-66.3%), containerized cargo (-57.1%), and other bulk (grab) (-21.7%).

    Makhachkala accounted for 58% of the aggregate cargo throughput via the Russian Caspian basin sea ports in August. Astrakhan handled 29%, and Olya 13% of the total.
