Russian Railways’ Cargo Loading Down 3.6% YoY in January-September

  • During January-September 2020, Russian Railways loaded 922.1 mn tons of cargo, down 3.6% year-on-year.

    Coal loading declined by 7.3% down to 256.2 mn tons. Oil and products, Russian Railways’ second most important cargo in terms of volume, decreased by 9.9% down to 156.1 mn tons. Ferrous and manganese ore was slightly up by 0.4% to 89.6 mn tons.

    Ferrous metals were down 10.9% to 49.5 mn tons, timber and logs down 2.9% to 31.5 mn tons, soda and chemicals down 6.8% to 18.1 mn tons, cement down 7.2% to 19.3 mn tons, ferrous metal scrap down 11.9% to 10.1 mn tons, and industrial and forming materials down 5.9% down to 25.1 mn tons.

    Construction cargo was up 6.7% to 101.7 mn tons, chemical and mineral fertilizers up 2.7% to 46.8 mn tons, non-ferrous ore and raw sulfur up 3% to 15.2 mn tons, grain up 24% to 18.3 mn tons, and coke loading up 2% to 8.2 mn tons.

    Rail cargo throughput during January-September made 1,876.6 bn tons per km, down 3.6% year-on-year.

    In September, Russian Railways loaded 105.2 mn tons of cargo, down 0.7% year-on-year. Cargo throughput amounted to 211.8 bn tons per km, down 0.5% year-on-year.
